“CodeDay is meant to get younger and inexperienced people excited about technology,” says organizer Jesse Michelsen.
“Salt Lake City can be the next tech center of the West coast by having events like CodeDay inspire the next generation of coders.” This event is one of 24 cities hosting this event simultaneously over the weekend. Although this is Salt Lake City’s first time hosting, Michelsen says he “hopes it will be a permanent stop.”
Having judged this type of event before, ZV co-founder Ramirez has been impressed by the young people who participate and the products they come up with. “We sometimes forget that the young generations have such an amazing view on business and technology.”
While the event tests entrepreneurial skills, it also gives participants a head start on building real-world technology products. “If they’ve got the next big idea, they’ll be discovered,” says Ramirez. “There’s always room for another new and very simple innovative product.”
Even if their final product isn’t immediately marketable, they’ll have a head start on making a name for themselves in the technology world. “The fact that they’re coming out and putting themselves in front of a judging panel is amazing,” says Ramirez. “It’s a clear indication that these are folks who want to get their ideas out there.”
ZV’s Guidelines for Creating a Winning Product:
- Keep it Simple—“The more complex it is in the business model, the harder it is for consumers to wrap their heads around it... It’s all about consumer and user engagement.”
- Solve a Problem—Not enough products in the market today are designed around solving real, everyday problems.
- Trust Your Passion—“You really have to have a passion about solving this problem in order for it to shine through in the product.”
Learning to build a successful product can help prepare kids for real-world problems. It teaches them simplicity in problem-solving and that success only comes by overcoming obstacles. “The moment you let a problem in life bring you down and you give up on something, then you’ve set yourself up for failure.”
CodeDay is run by StudentRND, a 501©(3) nonprofit organization based in Seattle that creates the next generation of technologists. CodeDay Spring 2014 will take place in 24 cities simultaneously, reaching nearly every major city in the United States, over 2,000 students, and as well as a geographic demographic not easily reached via other hackathons. They’ve hosted 31 events in 13 cities over two years.
