EDUCATION, HOW-TO HUSTLE, AND LGBT SOLUTIONS TOP OF MIND AS TEDXSANDY ROLLS OUT SPEAKER LINE-UP

Ideas and solutions regarding global education, becoming a street smart hustler for good, and compassion in the LGBT marriage debate are part of the line-up for TEDxSandy.

Sandy, UT, April 23, 2014-- TEDxSandy announced today the speaker line-up for the TEDx event at the Waterford Institute in Sandy, UT on April 26th, 2014. There are a total of 15 speakers/performers all focusing on the following topics: Pressures of Modern Life, Learning Under Pressure, and Innovation Under Pressure. TEDxSandy is bringing some of the valley's brightest minds together for a day of engaging presentations and performances. Here are a few examples:

Dr. Benjamin Heuston, PhD, President of the Waterford Institute

“Children are our future and it is increasingly clear that we are not helping them to effectively develop the academic foundation that they need to be successful individually,” explains Heuston, “and we will need to collectively be successful as a global community.” Heuston hopes to “shift the lens that people look through when it comes to education… it will inspire changes in behavior that are appropriate for each person’s individual circumstance.”

Heuston’s interest in early childhood education sparked when he was a child based on the work his father did in the industry. Now, as a father to 5 and after spending over 18 years working on the issues at hand, he believes what he works towards daily affects each person on the planet and we should all be concerned.

Ivan D. Ramirez, Co-Founder, Zerimar Ventures

“People in general aren’t under pressure and hustle isn’t something humans are born with. As we feel more pressure from what really matters,” Ramirez explains, “we develop a hustling spirit that drives innovation, creativity and entrepreneurs creating change.” Ramirez funds disruptive technology and social entrepreneurship, on a regional and global scale, with businesses in the UK, India, Colombia and here in the US.

Erika Munson, founder of Mormons Building Bridges

Hope of a lasting positive impact creates a yearning for “Compassionate listening [of] people they perceive as ‘the other’ and a [deeper] understanding of how moral intuition works,” states Munson.  She represents families and congregations across the state that may be impacted by the same-sex debate as Utah is at the unexpected ground zero position, nationwide.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)

About TED

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California almost 30 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. The two annual TED Conferences invite the world's leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes on a diverse mix of topics. Many of these talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The TED2014 Conference will take place in Vancouver, British Columbia, along with the TEDActive simulcast in neighboring Whistler. TEDGlobal 2014 will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

TED's media initiatives include the TED website, where new TED Talks are posted daily; the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as translations from volunteers worldwide; the educational initiative TED-Ed; and TEDBooks, short e-books on powerful ideas. TED has established the annual TED Prize, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world get help translating their wishes into action; TEDx, which supports individuals or groups in hosting local, self-organized TED-style events around the world; and the TED Fellows program, helping world-changing innovators from around the globe to amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.
